Daniel Buren. Five out of Eleven

Five out of Eleven presents a focused selection of graphic works by major figures of Minimal and Conceptual art, including Lucio Fontana, Mario Merz, and Daniel Buren. Although primarily known for their large-scale installations and site-specific interventions, the artists are brought together here through works on paper that reveal a shared conceptual engagement with space, structure, and architectural thought.

The exhibition highlights how graphic practice functions not as a preparatory or secondary medium, but as an autonomous field in which spatial ideas are articulated, tested, and formalized. In Fontana’s works, the gesture becomes a conceptual opening toward real space; in Merz’s drawings, numerical sequences and organic forms establish a dialogue between natural growth and constructed environments; and in Buren’s graphic works, the systematic use of stripes and repetition reflects an ongoing investigation into context, perception, and institutional frameworks.

Though diverse in language and generation, the three artists are connected by a common approach to art as an intervention within space—one that extends beyond the object to engage directly with architecture and the conditions of display. Five out of Eleven foregrounds this shared concern, showing how graphic works can embody the same rigor and spatial awareness that define their site-specific and architectural projects.

By bringing these works together, the exhibition offers a renewed perspective on the relationship between drawing, concept, and environment, underscoring the role of graphic practice as a critical tool in the development of installation-based and context-responsive art.
